USA takes a fall….
For as long as I can remember my family and I have been watching pageants as a means of good clean family entertainment. Actually, when I reflect further, it was always more of some sick war between the Lees as to who could pick out the winner. For my mom, it was always to fullfill some desire to see her own daughter up there prancing around with hairspray on my butt and vasaline smeared across my smile. In fact, I too was being groomed to steal the Miss. Korea Canada sash when I was to turn 18. I even had the wave down to perfection.
In Grade 8 I joined the debating team and found out that I was pretty darn good at arguing. Just ask my husband. He’ll tell you I’m a pro now. I had made it all the way to the BC finals in my junior year and there it was… the ominous resolution to debate.
BIR (Be it resolved) that beauty pageants are beneficial.
Without embelshing on the juicy details, I can, with pride, tell you that I won that year. I took it all home with my points for and against. It was also the end of my future as a sash princess and the crushing of one Asian mother’s great Canadian dream to be a pageant mom backstage.
It’s been years since I’ve caught a pageant from start to finish, in my recent years. Having said that I believe the forces of nature placed me in front of my television right at the magic moment when this happened…..
Let me tell you…. that is LIVE television at its best. It NEVER happens. These girls work there whole lives for that magic walk down the runway and of all countries to have taken the big fall… it was Miss USA, hosted in Mexico…oh what a kicker! Could it be any more metophorical? Well… one can hope.
Not a very profound blog post today but certainly one that has me still pondering over it this morning. Thank God for the internet. I can relive it over and over until I have officially stopped laughing.

On a more successful note, although I thought Miss Korea should have taken the crown (especially with a name like Honey Lee!!), 20 year-old Miss Japan took the title as Miss Universe last night. It’s a big deal for us Asians… a race consumed with its looks. We consider it a win for the whole team.
